DP660 "Bump Start" Vinyl 4 Track E.P.

  • Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

Like Dr. Frankengoof, The Scummy Mummy or even the mysterious finger probing around inside your sister’s doll’s house The Bumps are both an enigma and an unstoppable force of creepiness.
The bubblegum flavour of their music only serves to confuse the senses and mask the ridiculous truth about their world. Theirs is a world of girl group ritual, crazy golf delirium and midnight mind games. Generously, DEATH POP RECORDS have been granted brief access to this world via Wonka like circumstances and allowed inside the jewelled inner chamber of The Bumps’ pop pyramid. This important new release from DEATH POP RECORDS offers you the chance to sample just a handful of these riches. Cherish them while you can...

    Bump History
Summer 1966: Bubblegum duo Den Zonen and Jim Sox of THE BUMPS are pronounced dead following a horrific beach buggy accident in Malibu. Officials, however deem it appropriate to preserve their mangled bodies in ice.
Winter 2009: Carol Vorderman of Channel 4’s Countdown fame starts a nationwide campaign to regenerate the group’s legend and the boys are thawed out in time for the Christmas No.1 market. Never a group to play by the rules - the boys ignore this challenge and choose to record a tribute to the lovely Carol in the form of ‘Do The Math’, three minutes of pop perfection (with calculators). Due to an ecstatic response, they then follow this with their chewy pop smasher masterpeice of a debut single: ‘‘I’m A Creepy Guy’, ‘Love You Until You Are Dead’, ‘Heroin Girl’, ‘Don’t Get Ahead Of Yourself’!
Spring 2010: So as THE BUMPS debut single proper nears it’s completion, we visit the band at their Tiki-styled studio, ranch & crazy golf complex in South London to ask about the future, “All this means nothing” offers Keys/Bass/Electronics supremo Jim Sox, “we haven’t even started warming up yet!”

Some tasty nods in the general direction of Ambulance LTD, The Eskimos and The Flamin’ Groovies weld the mix onto a lazy eyed bubblegum pub rock chassis and voila, a bit of a babe in the making.

Toe tapping jewel crusted candy pop tastiness that to these ears appear to have been swiped straight from the arse pockets of The Raspberries. A darker half variation of The Everly Brothers yet struck with the kind of naïve kookiness that was once the hallmark of The Shaggs.

The weirdly eerie sassily saccharine 60s soft top psychedelicised pop of ’I’m A Creepy Guy’ with its wired fuzzy jangles ’Twilight Zone’ codas and shoe-shuffling strums had us recalling the more withdrawn & tender pop moments of Johnny Thunders pairing with Patti Palladin shortly before ‘Hi’.

Another band in the ‘Death Pop’ phenomenem that is taking over London, THE BUMPS may or may not be ‘real’, but either way make genius pop tunes that recall 1960s sex movies, Dastardly and Mutley, and Jim Morrison’s love poems. They even have a song called ‘Death Moth’ that is played entirely in reverse!

Heroin Girl’ in particular is a nuzzling treat threaded with wonky keys, Dylan-esque breezy harmonicas and an off kilter and inebriated hillbilly campfire warmth.

The Bumps come highly recommended in the latest Alfonzo Demo Kitchen column. Rated ‘LCD laced sugar cubes’ by the moustachioed culinary one... Sound like slinky farfisa garage pop to me.

Their psychedelic sound perfectly compliments their often off-beat, verging on the darker side of life lyrics. The Bumps deliver a sunny uplifting set of tracks which will make you want to move your feet. Their short songs are light hearted, party music that you can clap along to.

The Bumps are a UK based bubblegum/electro pop duo. Their sound is a melee of 60s psychedelia and garage rock hooks. Tracks like ‘Magick Eye’ inspire a dreamy surreal feeling which brings Captain Beefheart to mind. Whilst ‘Don’t Get Ahead Of Yourself’ falls more along the lines of The K.

Also includes immediate download of 4-track E.P. in your choice of 320k mp3, FLAC, or just about any other format you could possibly desire.
